Andromeda BluRay Review

So I haven’t finished watching Season 1 on BluRay yet, but I wanted to post some comparison pictures for those that are thinking of buying.

The BluRay release appears to be an upscale, so the quality isn’t actually an improvement. A little disappointing, because there’s almost nothing as exciting as the crispness of a scifi movie or series given a proper bluray treatment (action scenes, yay!). No sub-titles either.

But the real reason you’re here is the images, so without further ado here are a selection of images from episode 01:

I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to re-cap the series, as the quality doesn’t appear to be much of an improvement an overall.

Does anyone have any thoughts or comments about the release?

the Blueray is a bit crisper but nothing to make me want to suddenly buy Blueray versions Andromeda. I wouildn’t puit re-capping the series high on my to do list.

Open both comparison pictures in separate windows and blow up the DVD picture to match the size of the blu-ray picture. You’ll see a huge difference. The DVD has more detail and looks better while the bluray has detail scrubbed away into a blur.
    DVD wins.

I’m hearing that the HD Andromeda episodes on Amazon are proper HD quality.

And to follow this up, Seasons 3, 4, & 5 are actually proper HD and better than the DVD. Of note though, that with those last three seasons, the Bluray has a cooler color-timing/palette while the DVD picture is warmer. For example, Trance’s glittery makeup in the Bluray, is clear and apparent as makeup. In the DVD, there’s like a warm glow, like she’s radiated. So it can look quite different. Both look great and valid, it’s just that the Bluray is actually proper HD and higher in detail this time.

But the first two seasons, as you can see above, they have the same color-timing/palette, but the Bluray picture/detail is horrid.
